Mexico boasts a megadiverse avifauna that includes a remarkable number of endemic species, as well as rich assemblages of birds shared with both North and South America. The country ranks 11th worldwide in bird diversity, with 1,139 recorded species—approximately 10.5% of all bird species on Earth. Of these, around 116 species are considered endemic to Mexico.
Mexico protects nearly 170,000 km² through its network of Natural Protected Areas, which includes 34 Biosphere Reserves, 64 National Parks, and more than 50 additional protected areas under various conservation categories.
Together, these factors make Mexico one of the world’s premier birding destinations. The country’s top birding regions include some of the most species-rich habitats in the Americas, such as Chiapas in southern Mexico, home to an extraordinary diversity of tropical species shared with Central America. Other regions are especially attractive to birders seeking Mexico’s endemic species.
From northwestern Mexico to Oaxaca along the Pacific slope, birders can find the greatest concentration and diversity of endemic birds. In addition, many remote and isolated regions harbor unique species that attract dedicated birders from around the world. Most of Mexico’s finest birding destinations, key endemic hotspots, and the best locations for high species counts are included in our tours and itineraries.
We bird throughout every corner of the country. Whether through scheduled tours, custom extensions, or fully personalized itineraries, we can arrange experiences tailored to your specific interests and birding goals.
